Outback Elite Tours are the only operator to offer this tour.
Our Full Day Chambers Pillar & Oak Valley Aboriginal Cultural Tour is a unique and wonderful combination of a 4WD adventure, following in the footsteps of the early explorers through the Red Centre’s remote sand hill country; and an original and authentic Aboriginal cultural experience.
We get an early start and follow the original overland route south to the historic landmark of Chambers Pillar in our super comfortable 4WD. Our first stop is at the fascinating Ewaninga rock carvings, a registered sacred site.
The local Arrente Aboriginal people have been carving these petroglyphs for thousands of years. Learn about the cultural significance of these mysterious and ancient rock carvings before we break for a generous European-style morning tea.
Choose from a selection of home-made buns, fresh fruit, yogurt, biscuits, teas, and Italian brewed coffee.
On the way to Chambers Pillar we visit the remote Aboriginal community of Titjikala and its celebrated art centre. Take the chance to purchase an authentic and affordable piece of beautiful Central Australian Aboriginal art, knowing the proceeds will go back to the community*.
We then switch into 4WD and follow the route of the early explorers, across the ancient dry Hugh River and up to the Charlotte Range lookout, for breath-taking views of the vast Simpson Desert and the red, sandy track leading to the distant Chambers Pillar.
The Pillar was once a landmark for overland travellers heading north from Adelaide and, 150 years later, this unique country still some of the most remote in Australia. The track takes us past iconic desert oaks, through sand dune country, to the immense natural sandstone sculptures of the Chambers Pillar Historical Reserve.
You can walk around the enormous pillar or right up to the base, or both. Along the way you’ll learn about both the geology and the ancient Aboriginal creation stories of this amazing natural wonder.
This beautiful wilderness reserve is the perfect place to break for lunch after your walk. Relax and enjoy a gourmet spread, prepared on-site by your guide under the shade of the majestic desert oaks.
We then head north through the riverine woodlands to the secluded Aboriginal Community of Oak Valley for an authentic and relaxed Aboriginal cultural experience. Traditional owner Loy takes you on an extraordinary journey through her country for the next few hours as she shares the stories of her land, her family, and her culture.
This is a unique opportunity to learn first-hand about Aboriginal creation stories, bush tucker and medicine, and the secrets behind ancient indigenous rock art and petroglyphs.
We take the historic Old Ghan railway route back to Alice and, as always, we’ll drop you off at your accommodation after another unforgettable day with Outback Elite Tours.
